Hoffman Kiln Brickworks Chimney Remedial
Client: Marshall and Brougham
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Project Commenced: November 2016
Status: Complete
The Building
This very unique project involved the structural upgrade of the 106 year old, heritage listed Hoffman Kiln and Chimney Stack in Torrensville.
Works included:
- rebuilding the brick column around new structural steel column
- refurbishing the brickwork both around the kiln and to the chimney, via a range of remediation techniques
- structurally reinforcing the roof, including anchoring it, through the use of both steel and timber; and
- repainting the heritage signage on the chimney to increase the aesthetic appeal of the structure.
All remediation work was designed to withstand a 1:1000 year event.
West Torrens Council invested $1.5 million to restore the historic, 42 metre stack, which is the only remaining one of its kind in South Australia.
