Fifty female high-school students from around Perth were recently given an exciting opportunity to test out a career in mining first hand, by walking in the shoes of those already in the workplace.

Participating in the Work Inspirations Program - a joint initiative by South 32, the West Australian Department of Education and Smith Foundation - the girls donned high-vis vests and hard hats to experience seven different vocational activities, including emergency response and technology & engineering activities, as well as hands-on laboratory and trade experiences.

The aim of the program is to inspire female students and provide them with the confidence to pursue a career in the resources sector.

Two Waco Kwikform employees, Kelly Polglase and Amberlee May, were delighted to act as mentors to the students:

Being a mentor in this program was a fantastic experience! It was great meeting all the lovely young ladies and getting to know them all. I learnt a lot about Worsley from the walk arounds and all the group activities. It was a big eye opener for me and I’d love to participate every year that the program runs. It was a well organised program and Sam did a terrific job. All the girls were eager to see what she had planned for each day.  Amberlee May

It went well. I think the girls that did have an interest in working in this industry got a lot out of it. There was a good variety of options that were shown to them. It was rewarding giving the girls an opportunity to see the mining industry and that it isn’t as daunting and that there is a good percentage of women who enjoy working in this field.

Schools represented included Australind Senior High School, Bunbury Catholic College, Bunbury Senior High School, Eaton Community College, Grace Christian School, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and Harvey Senior High School.

The program also helps students to discover themselves through personality and career inspiration talks and activities.
